Tagwirei Elevated to Zanu PF Politburo as Wadyajena Joins Central Committee
Story By Staff Reporter
Zanu PF has elevated businessman and Senator Dr Kudakwashe Tagwirei to the Politburo as Secretary for Economic Affairs and Investment Promotion. The party also promoted Justice Mayor Wadyajena to the Central Committee. Party spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa announced the changes in a statement dated 15 October 2026.
What the Party Announced
Mutsvangwa, who serves as Secretary for Information and Publicity, said President Emmerson Mnangagwa made the appointments. The President acted through Secretary General Advocate J. F. N. Mudenda. He also followed the party constitution, which governs such appointments.
Specifically, the statement cites Article 7, on the appointment of Central Committee members. It also cites Article 8, on the Council of Elders, and Article 9, on Politburo members. The party said the appointments take effect immediately.
Three Changes at the Top
The statement lists three appointments:
- Justice Mayor Wadyajena joins the Central Committee as a member.
- Obert Moses Mpofu, formerly Secretary for Science and Technology, moves to the Council of Elders.
- Senator Dr Kudakwashe Tagwirei becomes Secretary for Economic Affairs and Investment Promotion, a newly re-designated position.
Tagwirei’s Rapid Rise
The Politburo post adds to a fast political climb for Tagwirei. Earlier this month, Mnangagwa appointed him Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion in Cabinet. Now the ruling party has also given him a senior place in its top decision-making organ.
Tagwirei once worked mainly behind the scenes as a financier. Today, however, he holds roles in government, Parliament and the party leadership. As a result, observers see him as one of the most influential figures in Zanu PF.
Wadyajena Moves Up
Wadyajena’s promotion to the Central Committee gives him a larger role in the party’s policy-making. The Central Committee is the party’s main governing body between congresses.
Mpofu Moves to the Council of Elders
Meanwhile, Mpofu leaves the Science and Technology portfolio. The party has placed him on the Council of Elders instead. The statement did not name a successor for his former post.
Timing Raises Questions
The announcement comes amid a tense succession contest within Zanu PF. Tagwirei is widely seen as an ally of Mnangagwa. Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga is seen as a rival. Therefore, many will read the appointments as a sign of where the President wants the party to head.
