Predictor forecasts good rains and strong cyclones despite Super El Niño drought warning

A climate observer forecasts a good 2026 to 2027 rainy season with heavy rains for Southern Africa. Many people currently worry about high temperatures and warnings of a Super El Niño drought.
Who Made the Forecast?
Liberty Chitakatira shared his observation after walking in town. Most people he met complained about the intense heat. He said several of them now fear investing in farming this year because of the Super El Niño forecast.
“Most people are saying that since the forecast says there is going to be a Super El Niño, they are now panicking,” said Chitakatira.
Chitakatira still believes the 2026 to 2027 season will be good.
What Is El Niño?
Chitakatira explained that El Niño is real. It is a natural climate pattern. It happens when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become warmer than normal. This warming changes wind patterns and weather conditions across the world.
In Southern Africa, El Niño usually brings below-normal rainfall, long dry spells and extremely high temperatures. However, he noted that warm waters in the Indian Ocean can also create cyclones. These cyclones can push heavy rains into Southern Africa.
“From what I know, sometimes the warm temperatures in the ocean will cause cyclones that might push water to countries in Southern Africa from the Indian Ocean,” he said.
His Projection for 2026/27
Chitakatira expects more than two strong cyclones this season. He says they will bring heavy rains to Southern Africa.
“I am predicting that this 2026 to 2027 rainfall season we are going to have more than two strong cyclones that are going to cause heavy rains in Southern Africa,” he said. “Yes, people are going to be affected by floods, but at the same time, that is sometimes good news.”
He argues that floods can also benefit farmers. “I am predicting a very good season where countries in Southern Africa are going to experience good rainfall and they are going to harvest good yields,” he said.
Advice to Farmers: Early Planning Is Key
Chitakatira urged farmers across Southern Africa to plan early if they want a good harvest. Farmers with irrigation should start planning now too.
“For people to have a good harvest they must do early planning, and people with irrigation across Southern Africa must also start planning,” said Chitakatira. “Those who plan late are also going to be affected.”
He expects most places to have a good harvest. A few places will still see high temperatures.
“Those who do early planning are going to benefit from this season,” he said.
