Family Outlines Chivayo Burial: Collection Wednesday, Burial Thursday, Dignitaries and Heads of State Expected

The family of businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy, also known as Lulu, has shared the details of the couple’s funeral arrangements. They died in the Marondera helicopter crash on 30 September 2026.
Family spokesman Hebert Chivayo outlined the programme in an interview with correspondent Sithathisiwe Gwaza. The details below are as he gave them, and they may change.
Burial Site Chosen at Glen Forest
According to Hebert Chivayo, the family visited Glen Forest to inspect and select the final resting place for both Wicknell and Lucy. Once the site was chosen, preparations for digging the graves began, in line with custom and traditional expectations.
Bodies to Be Brought Home for an Overnight Vigil
The family plans to collect the bodies between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM. They will then be taken to the couple’s home in Gletwin for an overnight wake and church service.
Programme on the Day of the Burial
According to the family, the procession will leave the Gletwin residence between about 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM the next day, heading for Glen Forest. The interments are scheduled for between 2:00 PM and 2:30 PM.
The family has said earlier that the burial is on Thursday, 8 October, and that it is open to the public.
Dignitaries Expected
Hebert Chivayo said attendees are expected to include dignitaries and heads of state from several countries, as well as representatives of local organisations.
A Call for Unity and Respect
Hebert Chivayo urged Zimbabweans to unite in love and to respect the family during the mourning period. He asked people to refrain from criticism at this time.
Investigation Continues
Police and the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe are still investigating the crash. The cause has not been officially determined.
