Story By Staff Reporter

Veteran Zimbabwean actor William Matenga, popularly known as Gweshegweshe in the television drama series Gringo, has died. He was 72.

Family sources say Matenga died this morning at a local medical facility after a short illness. Meanwhile, mourners have gathered at the family home in Zengeza 5, Chitungwiza.

A familiar face in Zimbabwean homes

Born in 1954, Matenga began acting in 1984. Over the years, he appeared in several television and radio productions.

However, Gweshegweshe made him a household name. He played the long-suffering employer of the mischievous gardener Gringo, whom the late Lazarus Boora portrayed. Because the two had such strong on-screen chemistry, the Gringo series became one of Zimbabwe’s best-loved comedies. Matenga also starred in Gringo Troublemaker (2013), the last production in which Boora acted before his death in November 2020.

A voice for the industry

Matenga also spoke openly about the challenges facing local actors. For example, he blamed piracy for the decline in earnings across the acting industry. In addition, he urged newcomers to stay patient and said he was proud of the talent Zimbabwe has produced.

Furthermore, he often praised his working relationship with producer Enock Chihombori and Boora, calling it the best he had known. According to Matenga, much of the humour came straight from everyday life, and the cast frequently invented scenes on set.

Off screen, Matenga was a father of four. He once said acting put food on the family table.

Funeral arrangements

The family has not yet announced funeral arrangements. We will update this article as soon as they confirm details.

Many people will remember Matenga for his contribution to Zimbabwe’s entertainment industry. May his soul rest in peace.
