Hazardous Chemical Spill on Harare-Bindura Road
An accidental chemical spill involving a truck transporting Liquid Aluminium Sulphate (commonly known as alum) occurred along the Harare–Bindura Highway in Mazowe District. Out of approximately 5,000 litres spilled, about 2,000 litres were successfully recovered, while the remaining portion was absorbed into the roadside soil.
The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) responded promptly to manage the scene, barricade the area, and initiate containment and cleanup operations.
What is Liquid Aluminium Sulphate?
Liquid aluminium sulphate is an inorganic salt widely used in water treatment plants for purification, as well as in paper manufacturing. While it is a helpful industrial chemical, it is corrosive and acidic in liquid form, meaning it requires careful handling.
Dangers of the Spilled and Absorbed Liquid
When liquid aluminium sulphate is fresh or uncontained, it poses immediate chemical hazards. Once it is absorbed into the roadside soil, specific risks remain until it is thoroughly treated:
- Skin and Eye Irritation/Burns: Direct contact with the liquid or contaminated soil can cause severe skin irritation, redness, and serious eye damage.
- Environmental and Ecological Impact: Aluminium sulphate is moderately toxic to aquatic life and vegetation. If heavy rains wash the absorbed chemical from the soil into nearby water streams or drainage systems, it can lower water quality and harm fish and aquatic organisms.
- Livestock and Human Health Risk: Ingestion or direct exposure by roaming livestock, children, or local residents can lead to internal irritation or chemical burns.
Safety Measures and Public Precaution
Authorities, led by EMA, have outlined critical guidelines to protect the community:
- Avoid the Area: Do not enter, cross, or interfere with the barricaded accident site.
- No Direct Contact: Prevent any physical contact with the contaminated soil or residual liquid.
- Keep Livestock Away: Ensure that children and domestic animals or livestock are kept far away from the site to prevent accidental grazing or exposure.
- Road Safety: Motorists travelling along the Harare–Bindura Highway should exercise caution and follow instructions from safety personnel on-site.

- How long until it disappears and causes no more harm?Aluminium sulphate does not break down or “evaporate” on its own like organic solvents because it is a mineral salt. Instead, its active hazard relies on its concentration and acidity. Left untreated in the soil, it could pose localized environmental risks for a prolonged period, particularly by altering soil chemistry or washing into water bodies during rainfall.
- Professional Remediation:To neutralize this risk, EMA is overseeing a structured cleanup process. This involves excavating the contaminated roadside soil and treating it safely so that the environment is restored to its original state. Once the physical removal, neutralization, and proper disposal of the affected earth are completed by environmental experts, the area will no longer pose a threat to public health or nature.
