Chinhoyi Locks Down Ahead Of ZANU-PF Conference
Story By Staff Reporter
CHINHOYI – With just three days to go before Zanu-PF hosts its 23rd National People’s Conference at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT), authorities say preparations are well advanced and security has been stepped up in and around the town.
The conference, running from 12 to 17 October, will be held under the theme “From Resolutions to Results: Consolidating Economic Development and Deepening Empowerment towards Vision 2030.”
Preparations “above 95 percent”
Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland West, Honourable Marian Chombo, said preparations had surpassed 95 percent.
She said accommodation facilities had been revamped at CUT and across Chinhoyi, with hostels and hotels now ready to receive delegates. Work on water infrastructure and road rehabilitation has also been carried out.
Business activity in the town, including accommodation providers and markets, has picked up ahead of the gathering.
Security beefed up
Minister Chombo said security had been tightened at the conference venue and across Chinhoyi. Traffic officers are expected to be deployed along the Harare–Chirundu Highway to ensure the event runs smoothly.
“We have enough security to make sure everybody is safe,” she said, responding to concerns that may arise over safety at such a large event.
Police will maintain a strong presence on the roads to deal quickly with breakdowns or any disturbances during the conference week.
Road network and traffic arrangements
Roads leading to Chinhoyi have been maintained, including the routes from Harare and Chegutu. Motorists who do not need to use the main highway have been urged to consider the Murombedzi route, which is less busy and carries fewer trucks.
The Ministry of Transport has also agreed not to issue permits for abnormal loads during the conference week, to reduce congestion and the risk of breakdowns on the highway.
