Government Investigates Reported WhatsApp Account Takeovers
Story By Staff Reporter
The Government has launched an investigation into reported WhatsApp account takeovers affecting citizens and businesses. Authorities say they are treating the matter with serious concern.
Government Engages Meta
The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) is working with Meta, the owner of WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram. Officials say Meta’s involvement is essential. The company can investigate activity on its platforms and support account protection and recovery.
Authorities have already started contacting Meta. They expect the company to provide information that will help establish the facts. In addition, the affected mobile network operator is expected to issue a press statement.
What Citizens and Businesses Should Do
Government is urging the public to review their accounts without delay. Users should check the following:
- Account access and login activity
- Linked devices
- Advertising activity
- Payment transactions
Officials also warned users never to share their passwords, PINs or verification codes. Furthermore, anyone who receives a request for money should verify it independently before sending anything.
Report Crimes Through Trusted Channels
Authorities advised the public to use trusted channels when reporting criminal activity. Victims should report cases to the police. This will help to support affected users and establish what happened.
Government Promises Updates
Government said it will share verified information as it becomes available. Until then, officials want users to stay alert and protect their accounts.
Meanwhile, Econet Wireless has also urged customers to secure their WhatsApp accounts. The company recommends enabling Passkeys and two-step verification, and removing unfamiliar linked devices.
