“How Do You Buy Another Man’s Wife a Car?” — Mahere Torches Chivayo’s Latest Gift

Opposition politician and constitutional lawyer Fadzayi Mahere and businessman Wicknell Chivayo are clashing again on social media. This time, the dispute is over the cultural appropriateness of his high-value car gifts to married women — and it escalated when Chivayo responded to her questions with a remark about her own marital status.
On 6 September 2026, Chivayo announced a gift for Bebe Angel, wife of UK-based Prophet Uebert Angel: a brand-new 2026 Rolls-Royce Ghost facelift, valued at roughly US$650,000–750,000 after import duties. He also gave Uebert Angel US$250,000 in cash. In his post, Chivayo called Bebe Angel a mother figure and a pillar of strength, saying she was loved and appreciated by millions.
Mahere quote-posted the announcement with a pointed question: why does a man buy another man’s wife a car? She asked whether the gesture aligned with hunhu — the Shona ethical concept broadly meaning humanity, decency and right relationship — and closed with her recurring line: “We need new leaders.”
The post drew over a quarter of a million views and hundreds of replies. Reactions split: some backed her line of questioning, others accused her of reading too much into an act of generosity.
Chivayo replied the next day, addressing Mahere directly. He suggested that because she has never been a wife, gestures like his wouldn’t make sense to her.
Mahere responded in Shona, saying she has no personal relationship with him and telling him to leave ordinary married women out of it — again ending with her line about needing new leaders.
Other users criticized Chivayo’s response. One reply from a verified account argued that invoking Mahere’s marital status was a way of dodging a substantive answer about a vehicle reportedly worth around US$355,000 — deflection, the user said, dressed up as sentiment.
This isn’t the first time Mahere has publicly pressed Chivayo. She has previously questioned:
- A US$100,000 cash bonus paid outside the formal banking system
- His presence in official presidential delegations
- Whether his ambulance donations count as philanthropy, or as a partial offset against money his company has been alleged to still owe the state from the Gwanda Solar Project
Chivayo has responded in the past by accusing her of running a personal vendetta and being a “clout chaser.”
Gifting cars to the wives of men he publicly celebrates is a well-established habit for Chivayo. Past recipients include:
- Rufaro Chiworeso Mukombe — Jah Prayzah’s wife
- Daisy Mtukudzi — widow of the late Oliver Mtukudzi
- Mambo Dhuterere’s wife
- Prophet Ian Ndlovu’s wife
- Prophetess Ruth Makandiwa — wife of UFIC founder Emmanuel Makandiwa, who received a Mercedes-AMG G-Wagon in August 2026 while her husband received a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, and the couple jointly received a Mercedes-Maybach as an anniversary gift
In most of these cases, gifts went to both spouses rather than the wife alone.
The dispute reflects a recurring tension in how Chivayo’s philanthropy plays out publicly. Supporters see generosity that recognizes women’s often-unacknowledged domestic labor. Critics, including Mahere, question the propriety of the gestures, the source of the funds, and whether they function as genuine charity — or as a public-relations exercise tied to political loyalty.
