ZIFA Must End Warriors Coaching Experiments

The current state of the Zimbabwe senior men’s national football team, the Warriors, is at a crossroads that demands immediate, professional action from the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA). As we look toward the upcoming AFCON qualifiers, the pattern of “experimental” appointments and the revolving door of coaches must come to an end. Our national team is not a training ground for inexperienced personnel; it is a flagship that requires a seasoned, tactically astute, and proven professional at the helm.

The Need for a Substantive, Experienced Coach

We cannot continue the cycle of appointing caretaker coaches who lack the international experience required to navigate the high-stakes environment of AFCON qualification. While individuals like Kaitano Tembo have contributed to the game, his experience—much like that of others recently associated with the technical bench—remains insufficient for the demands of the national head coach position. We believe it is more prudent for such coaches to continue their development as assistants under a veteran leader, rather than being thrust into a role that currently appears beyond their depth.

The history of our national team is a testament to the fact that when we gamble on unproven leadership, the nation suffers. We are tired of the “hiring and firing” culture that has plagued our campaign preparations. The dismissal of previous coaches mid-campaign has already cost us dearly in past cycles, and we must not repeat these administrative blunders. We urge ZIFA to prioritize:

• Stability: Appointing a coach with a long-term vision who is given the time and support to build a competitive squad.
• Proven Track Record: Seeking a candidate with verifiable success in managing national teams or top-tier professional clubs.
• Strategic Planning: Implementing a clear roadmap for future competitions, including the 2030 World Cup and subsequent AFCON finals.

A Reflection on Historical Leadership

The history of the Warriors’ coaching bench is long and varied, featuring a mix of local legends and foreign tacticians. From the eras of Reinhard Fabisch, whose “Dream Team” captured the nation’s imagination in the 1990s, to the stints of Sunday Chidzambwa, who provided local stability, and more recently, the tenures of Norman Mapeza, Zdravko Logarušić, and Michael Nees, we have seen that the impact of the head coach is direct and profound.

Recent years have been particularly turbulent. The departure of Michael Nees in late 2025 following a difficult World Cup qualifying campaign led to the appointment of Marian Marinica, a UEFA Pro License holder with experience managing the national teams of Malawi and Liberia. While ZIFA has made efforts to improve coaching standards—such as the current CAF D and CAF B coaching courses being conducted at ZIFA Village and Chitungwiza—there remains a disconnect between these educational initiatives and the immediate, elite-level results required by the senior national team.

A Call for Integrity and Professionalism

Beyond the technical bench, we acknowledge the recent ZIFA announcement regarding the suspension of five match officials—Phikisani Ndlovu, Chamunorwa Tapiwa, Christian Gumbeze, Graduate Mubobo, and Praise Mkwevo—for incorrect officiating decisions. This serves as a reminder that integrity and accountability must be the pillars of our football administration. If we are to demand excellence from our players and coaching staff, we must ensure that every aspect of the game, including refereeing, is managed with the highest professional standards.

We have the talent to compete with the best on the continent. What we lack is the administration that treats our national team with the seriousness it deserves. We are calling on ZIFA to stop the “plumber” approach to hiring and invest in a coach who has the vision, the record, and the authority to lead our Warriors to glory. The time for experimentation is over; the time for professional, top-tier leadership is now.
